With over 250 countries printing paper money the hobby is what you make it.
People collect world currency and banknotes many different ways, some collect topicals, like animals, birds, trains, elephants, airplanes, certain countries, types of flags, picture money of all types and literally 100's of other ways.
Collecting paper money is as unique as the people collecting it. Books on collecting paper money are available, check our Book Section.
Many people start their World Paper Money Collections by buying one or more of our inexpensive Banknote Starter Packages. Others with a little more capital will buy the paper money books and look through them and then decide what type of paper money to collect or buy the books to find out what their present or inherited paper collection is worth.
The grading of paper money is like the grading of coins, however, it is much simpler. Click here to read the World Grading Standards of Paper Money.
Collecting new uncirculated paper money can be a very inexpensive hobby, however, collecting older and used paper money from different countries can be very difficult to find and in some cases very expensive. Uncirculated paper money from countries that no longer exist can be extremely rare, yet not very expensive because of the small number of people collecting it. Book prices in many cases do not match the rarity and to many dealers and collectors, like the prices shown in the Krause Catalogs, have little meaning. In other words, a piece of paper money or note is worth what you are willing to pay for it when you can locate it.
One of things I have discovered about banknotes and currency is that when you come across a piece of world currency or banknote you want, buy it, because you may never see it again.
There are dealers who specialize in certain countries and even certain time periods or certain types of topicals, such as U.S. Large Notes, Military Payment Certificates, and Wildlife Banknotes.
There are many dealers like us who do not specialize in any particular area of paper money and are general dealers in all countries and time periods. The general dealers usually purchase all types of collections, specialty dealers will only purchase their specialty. Our Starter Packages make great gifts at a very low cost. We offer packages from 10 Banknotes to 100 Banknotes and individual items in the World Paper Money Index.
General dealers are usually less expensive per item, because they deal in volume, rather than knowing what the traffic will bear in a particular country's rarity. If you know the field, many times you can buy from a general dealer and turn around and sell to a specialty dealer and make a tidy profit. You can become a Reseller and start your own Paper Money Business at home or on the Internet.
Most rare coin shops and bullion dealers do not deal in paper money or notes because they haven't taken the time to learn the field. Consequently there are less paper money dealers than coin dealers in the field. This can sometimes make it harder to find the paper money you are looking for.
Let's say you find a nice 1899 dollar bill and it costs you $150.00. That's 150 times it's original worth. The same thing might be true of a nice piece of Japanese 10 Yen or Japanese Invasion Currency. Did you pay too much for either? Not if you wanted it and it made your collection stand out.
A FREE Million Dollar Bill is sent with each order.
